Conquering the Catwalk

By Pablo Bairan

One of the most distinct and difficult aspects of cosplay in the Philippines is the catwalk. For some, this nerve-wracking experience is often intimidating, and the possibility of embarrassment tends to dissuade beginners. There are, however, tips and tricks that a cosplayer can use in order to improve his or her performance on stage, as well as diminish the possibility of an untoward incident.

Cosplay.ph donates to Museo Pambata

Last December 1, 2012, Cosplay.ph organized its annual Christmas Party, not only as a get together for cosplayers, Cosplay.ph friends and supporters interested in food and games, but also to help out Museo Pambata, a museum designed solely for children in mind, by asking attendees to donate toys for their 18th Anniversary on December 16.  All collected toys were then picked up by their staff later that week and they invited Cosplay.ph if they could attend their anniversary celebration, in which we did.

The Museo PaCarolersmbata, located at the corner of Roxas Blvd. and South Drive was founded by Former Department of Social Welfare and Development secretary Estefania Aldaba-Lim, who along with Nina Lim-Yuson, a childhood educator and mother of four, and several like-minded individuals, presented their proposal to Manila Mayor Alfedo Lim in March 1993 where it was quickly approved.  With the help of sponsors, the first discovery museum for young Filipino children, opened its doors on December 21, 1994.[source]  This year marked its 18th anniversary, with the actual celebration to be done earlier on December 16 instead of 21.

Upon our arrival, we were greeted by a cacophony of children waiting for their turn to enter the compound.  Each batch came from different accredited barangays, who were greeted at the museum’s lobby by a choir of carolers singing Christmas Songs under a huge hanging replica of a Humpback Whale.

Children were then led to each room that had a unique theme which discussed Biology, Anatomy, Philippine History and Culture, Arts, Society, Ecology and cultures from other asian countries.

Pooh BearAfter the tour, they were led at the plaza area where a cultural show was held, which at the time, featured a Spanish/Mexican Dance and later gave each child a Museo Pambata gift bag that held all the donated toys along with sponsored treats.  Some of the toys donated by those who attended the Cosplay.ph Christmas Party were easily noticeable as they were being segregated into their assigned gift bags.

The event started as early as 8am and children were still lining up in batches past 12nn.  Clearly the spirit of giving was ever present as children who came left with smiles on their faces and warmth in their hearts, thanks to the efforts of Museo Pambata as well as those who helped them by donating their toys for a good cause.

With this said, Cosplay.ph would like to greet everyone a Merry Christmas and may your hearts be generous always!

Of Swords and Samurais: UPAME Swordplay at SM City The Annex

upameswordplayUPAME or also known as the University of the Philippines Anime Manga Enthusiasts, in partnership with Movie Punch and SM Cinemas, celebrated the launch/premier screening of the live-action adaptation of one of the most beloved anime shown in the Philippines: Rurouni Kenshin, or Samurai X with an event called Swordplay: Rurouni Kenshin Cosplay Competition.

The event was held on December 2, 2012 at the 4th floor of SM City The Annex, North Edsa, where it started at 12nn with a band Yui for President, singing the classic RK songs from the anime, and later with games such as a Pinoy Henyo variant featuring trivia from the anime, as well as a Quiz Bee and an RK Art Contest, as well as raffles.  The event also featured RK Toy displays and booth sponsors.

But the most anticipated highlight was the event’s cosplay competition which featured the RK Anime Category.  Jin Joson, a prominent Filipino cosplayer and a huge fan of the series herself who came cosplaying as the feared yet lovable battousai, was invited as one of the panel of judges for the event.

The winner of the RK Cosplay Category was Arnel Serioso, who cosplayed as a fresh-from-battle Shinsengumi captain Saito Hajime, who also had the opportunity to pose with Jin Joson, whom their costumes are adeptly matched.

MyFile 1The event ended at 5pm, but the fun was just starting with the much anticipated opening of the movie screening scheduled at 8pm.  Long lines already formed as early as 7pm, and the opening was graced with games hosted by HERO TV, who gave away toys and gift certificates from sponsors.  The lights dimmed at 8:30pm and show finally started.

Nothing feels more alive then a movie theater filled entirely of fans.  Nobody, or at least in our area, were talking unnecessarily and everyone reacted with cheers, gasps and even boos as both heroes and villains were finally shown on screen by actors who had so much to hurdle in terms of the fans’ standards and expectations.

Fortunately, there were very little disappointments in all aspects, and everyone left the theater with the promise of watching it again on its regular screening premier starting December 5.

Many thanks to UPAME for giving fans the opportunity to watch the advance screening of the much awaited Rurouni Kenshin movie and seeing our favorite characters in live-action.  More power to UPAME and we look forward for your upcoming 2013 event AME 1UP on February 23, 2013 at the World Trade Center, Pasay City.
